Like others note, this is a big risk. You really have no idea of what you are getting.
However, if you can get something cheap enough you *can* come out OK, but you have to realize going in that it's risky if you hope to find a real deal. IMO, it will only pay if you can do *everything* it needs yourself, and can get a good look at the car first. But even then, it's a big risk. Cars are at auction for a reason.
New car dealers usually dump 9Ks (or any older models) to local used car dealers. The cars that don't go locally are usually dogs and go to auctions. Some Saab stores will keep nice ones and sell them.
I looked for over a year for my 96 CSE. Drove a bunch of cars, at a Saab dealer and at a local used Saab specialist. Finally found the right car via this site and drove 4 hours to NJ to get it from a site sponsor. But I just got a '95 CS from people we know who were trading to an Audi. Just missed another friend's car that was traded on a 9-5 wagon.
There are a lot of good 9Ks out there. Visit all your local dealers--including other makes, like Audi or Subaru that seem to have some Saab buyer crossover. Tell the sales manager you are looking for a 9K and would be willing to take a car without a warranty or reconditioning. It's worth a shot. But just keep looking--you'll find a good one.
