I replaced the transmission in my '95 Aero 5 spd in January. Second time in as many years. First (original) transmission had sudden total failure at 125,000 miles. This second tranny (Erricson rebuild) died a slow death where there was lots of drivetrain lash and eventually, the transmission started to bind up at very low speed.

My new-to-me transmission (probably an errickson) has some issues, too. First, on cold mornings (below 20-Degrees Fahrenheit) it makes a horrible, intermittant screeching sound under load until it warms up a little - about 5 minutes of driving. Second, when it is cold, the car seems to want to lurch forward when I release the clutch when it is neutral. I swear it would drive off if I didn't hold it with the brake. This, too, diminishes after a few minutes.

Thirdly is gear whine. I understand a little gear whine is OK, but this transmission seems really loud, especially in 1st and 3rd gear.

I took it back to the shop that installed it and the guy said he thought the transmission was fine. Now that it is warming up, it no longer makes the horrible screeching sound in the mornings.

I'm afraid that the transmission will go very soon after the 1-year warranty expires, and then I'll be forced to burn the car to the ground.

Any ideas on what to do? Are all rebuilt transmissions crap? I'm having a hard time believing it's just bad luck. Get a second opinion? Go back to the garage again? Make sure that the transmission breaks before the warranty expires (wink-wink)?

Not very pleased,

Chris
