I would think that red plugs would be due to some sort of contaminants in the fuel. Or maybe just one of the new fuel mixtures they use. I'd check the new ones again in a couple of weeks and see.
As to the MPG - that's easy. When they replaced the alternator, they disconnected the battery. The MPG calculation is based on a past average. Before it was replaced, you were basing it on a very long baseline. When the battery was disconnected ,the mileage computer resets, and is based on a very short time-line - since the alternator was replaced. It's reflective of gas mileage only since then, which may have been better. It will eventually even out.
