I went through this last year with my '92. Eventually, I dropped the rear seats, and with a hose running water down the rear hatch, I waited in the back and watched. I also removed the fabric inner-panel on the bach of the hatch for better visibility.
You can play water at different parts, and determine if the problem is up high or down low on the hatch.
In my case, the water was dripping from part of the folded metal that provides structural support. Water is supposed to run down the rails of the chassis - the rubber gasket should keep it out. Make sure the gasket isn't ripped.
For my car, the problem turned out to be very low on the hatch. The glass is attached to the hatch frame with adhesive. It appears that the sealant lost integrity right at the bottom. At the base of the glass there is a plastic trim piece. You can remove that piece - it just peels out - and you'll see a groove. Again, this was my car, and yours may be different, but if water got into that groove, it would run up and over the rim, and under the glass. At that point, it traveled for a bit and dripped at the side. My solution was to re-caulk the glass. Basically, I filled that groove with some windshield caulk. The groove is very narrow where the glass meets it, so I ran a bead on the opening of the groove, and used a stiff wire to poke the caulk down into the groove, and up a bit to where the glass meets the hatch. After it dried, I stuck the trim back in.
But I'd get some pillows, a flashlight, and a hose to start.
