I recently noticed that the rad fan in our 91 has not been coming on at all. This is two months after I replaced the radiator, thermostat, and a mess of hoses. I opened the fuse box, and noticed that the high speed (30 amp) fuse was blown. Now I need to figure out the testing procedure to figure out which compenent is indeed faulty.
After searching the BB, I came across a few possibilities:
#1--fan motor itself, which is tested by connecting the fan directly to the battery.
#2--thermo fan switch (mine is a three wire) I suspect this one, since the wires look a bit frayed.
#3--fan resistor on fan shroud
Question #1: In order to connect the fan motor to the battery, I run a jumper wire from the positive side of the battery to the green wire on the resistor (which is located on the fan shroud). Is this right?
Question #2: If I get the engine up to operating temp, and then jumper a wire across the connectors to the thermo fan switch, and the fan runs, then the thermo fan switch is bad. Black is to ground, and which other should I use (there's a white and a blue wire)?
Question #3: I read that the fan resistor can be tested by jumpering 12v from the battery to the connector side of the resistor (fan runs resistor is ok). "If the fan runs on the motor side of the resistor only, the resistor is open." Is this information correct, and how can I test the "motor side" of the resistor?
Question #4: Did I miss anything? Are there other things I should test?
Sorry to run so long, but this electrical stuff is not my best area, and I'm trying to make sure I understand things before I go testing things.
Thanks for any insight you may have.
