the problem I encountered was the bottom mounting bolt was frozen. Got the nut off fine, but the bolt wouldn't budge to free the bottom of the shock from the car. I tried every thing I had at the house. PB blaster, heat, 2 ft breaker bar. It wouldn't move. Finally, I put the tires back on and drove it to the local tuffy shop. They cut the bolts out with a torch (I had a propane soldering torch, but just not the same).
My thoughts, get the shock absorber you want...then give it a shot. The bolts aren't hard to get at. Your car is a lot newer than my 91 CD, and depending on environmental fators your bolts may not be coldwelded in place. If you cannot get the bolts out, take it to the shop. They charged me 1.5 hours of labor, but spent 2.5 hours on the job. They were embarrased that they had such a hard time removing the bolts that they didn't charge me more than the original quote.
PS: to remove the top nut in the sedan you have to remove your trunk liner/carpet, or at least fold it down to get access to the mounting nut.
