Thanks Ari et al., I'll start with the APC anti-knock checkout. From your description, this seems the most likely problem. Thanks for explaining Ron's point. I hadn't appreciated the issue with knock.

I always run high octane fuel (>91, typically 93). The motor is very smooth, although when cold the timing chain and valves can be fairly loud (they quiet down nicely after a brief warm up).

As for Michael's point, the DIU and plugs were replaced 20,000 miles ago when I first got the car (DIU had failed). This story may be of interest.

I had the DIU done at SAAB. Service tech told me at the time the "someone may have re-programed the ECU" because the car was operating under full boost condition all the time (doubt that!). I drove the car home is a heavy rain storm with a slow buick in front of me (I think 25 mph was that car's top speed), so I never got to feel this full boost condition. Next day I took the car off the road to change out the clutch, front suspension, brakes, control arm bushings, serp belt, etc (guess I wasn't is such a hurry to get on the road after all!).

When I put the machine back together, base boost only. Been that way since, (In an effort to fix, I changed TCS safety valve, cruise control relief valve, hooter, BCV, etc).

Maybe my 10 thumbs disconnected the APC knock sensor? Finally, CEL is not on, never has been.

Perhaps this is unrelated. The TCS/CTRL light sometimes glows very, very faintly, noticable only at night. This is not a LHM condition, car drives fine. (I know all about the real LHM situation with the very bright TCS/CTRL light, having lived through that with my 93 CSE. For the less experienced readers, in LHM car gives base boost only.) For the 92, I have always suspected the glowing light to be a leaky diode(??). Regardless, when the TCS/CTRL does not glow, still have just base boost. To be clear, the TSC/CTRL light is nice and bright at start up, just as it should be.

Thanks! Thanks! Thanks! I'll let everyone know the outcome.

BTW, where is the APC anti knock sensor???

Ed
