I don't think that rod knock, big or small end, goes away after warmup. I do know from my 9000 that valve and timing chain noises can be loud when motor is cold and become quiet when warm. Adjusting valve clearances may not be relevant if its a sticking lifter (after all, the SAAB's clearance are always correct, but the valves can still be noisy).
I bought an automotive stethoscope from Sears (~$15). Its great for isolating motor sounds. I reccommend it.
