...at whether the nut and top of the strut shaft come up through the tower. I think they do, just a little, which means that to get to OEM ride height (or lower) the right way you'd still have to cut the top of the tower. Otherwise, you might come up with a way to mount the bearing to the underside of the tower, but you'd need a different top mount.
You could certainly come up with a template for doing the cutting, along with a plate to properly locate the strut in the top. Some adjustability would be desirable, since after 100K miles and the occasional bodywork a lot of 9000s aren't going to be exactly as they were built.
