put a gauge on the low pressure side of the compressor. This will tell you how much R134a you have in the system. You can get a gauge at Wal-Mart or an auto parts store. Or better yet, take the car to an indy Saab mechanic you trust for an pre-buy inspection and have him check the A/C. I'll bet you are just low on refrigerant.
Also, check to see that the compressor is actually turning on. I wasn't getting cold air yesterday and I found it wasn't coming on. The relay was flakey.
As for the tranny whine (this is where the deal-breaker could be), you definitely need to have a tech check it out. You may just be low on trans oil. Or it could be a sign of pending failure. And so--as documented by the tech--it becomes a negotiating point.
