"short the pin" = "jumper between one and two" = run a wire (16 gauge is fine) between the socket connections.
If you have a three wire thermoswitch, one wire is black (for ground), and the other two were blue and white in my car (91).
With the ignition in the ON position (not START), unplug the thermoswitch. Using the plug that is connected to the wiring harness (NOT the plug on the thermoswitch), run a wire from the black socket to one of the other ones. Each of the colored wires is for one of the fan speeds. Sorry, I can't remember which was which.
Your fan should turn on during both combinations--DON'T run the high speed for very long, you'll blow the fuse!
If the fan does come on both speeds, you know the thermoswitch is bad. If not, it is something else in the circuit (fuses, relays, capacitor, or fan motor).
BTW, I had a bad thermoswitch, and the temp gauge behaves much more normally now.
Good luck.
