Before you worry about replacing the gear in the tranny, make sure that the speedo sensor hasn't simply fallen off the transmission case. Open the hood, and look down between the back of the transmission and firewall. The sensor is a cylinder that that sticks straight down into the top of the transmission, and has a cable coming off it. The sensor is just a press fit in, so quite often it works its way out. I've had speedos fail, and when I looked in, I would see the sensor dangling on it's cable.
There were different speedo configs in different years - what year is your car?
