Interesting cross coupling of turn signal relays

Interesting thing happened with my 93 9000CSE; it was a bright sunny day and I was eating at a fast food joint when I looked out at my car- What the- ? Saw the turn signals flashing on and off. Thought maybe the alarm tripped, but walking to the car, it wasn't sounding off, just flashing the right turn signal. Opened the door, flipped the TS lever to off, and the signals went off. Turned it to the left, and the left blinkers blinked, normally as you please, with no keys in the car. Strange, I thought.
Turned out it was because I happened to have a solar powered trickle charger plugged into the lighter socket (for no real good reason, because the lighter socket is switched, so it'd only supply some juice while I'm driving). But apparently power through the socket switches on a relay for the turn signal power. Looked through the schematics briefly, but didn't spot a clear reason why. Never could get used to the Haynes way of drawing schematics, with their odd looking boxes and key codes.
Needless to say, I don't leave the thing plugged in any more, since it could drain my battery on a sunny day if I didn't turn off the turn signals.
