still trying to figure out uneven idle...

which started just prior to me replacing the valve cover gasket and thermostat, and radiator, so i don't think i messed something up...
most starts the car idles unevenly, gets slightly better or goes to normal after a little bit of time. when it is really uneven in the beginning, can still feel the unevenness when i give it gas throughout lower rpm range (up to 2000 or so).
when the ac compressor comes on, doesn't get worse, idles seems to go up a little, but then when it shuts off, the idle drops considerably, maybe 6 or 700, then pulls back up to 950.
gas seems to help the unevenness as it rises above 950-1000 rpms, but i can still feel the idle shifting ever so slightly up and down
this is a new problem, i've realized, and different from the one that predated my new plugs and DI cassette.
i didn't see any obvious air leaks, any specific hoses to check?
do my symptoms suggest IAC needs cleaning? idle only goes up a little when the AC compressor shifts on
tach bounces while starting
throttle body was cleaned 20,000 miles ago
don't know how old 02 sensor is
air filter is clean
thanks
