Its been awhile since I did my clutch job, but here's something I remember that might be applicable.
The drive cup into which the right side tripod inserts is connected to the transmission by a long splined tube. When you banged on the outer CV joint, you disturbed the needle bearings in the right side tripod (they can come out, even if the tripod does not entirely clear the cup). Perhaps the sound of loose needle bearings in the cup is being transmitted through the drive tube to the left hand side of the car???
If you did damage the tripod in this procedure, I suspect that it was about to fail anyway, is there is significant play in the tripod/cup fitting.
I suggest you check the right side tripod/cup play (in the "up and down" direction --- jack up the car but be sure to have the right wheel supporting a lot of the car's weight, otherwise the tripod will not be fully inserted into the drive cup). Also, peel back the inner boot and inspect the tripod/cup. Is there grease, what condition, any loose needles????
good luck
