At one point I had 3 81 Datsuns in a short period of time. Number one, a 4x4 pickup, had a groove etched in the head that allowed coolant into one cylinder. It would pour out white smoke at startup but then would burn off and run reasonably well. It didn't overheat as long as I kept adding coolant. I drove it for a few weeks that way and eventually pulled the head, had the groove filled with weld, sanded it smooth, and put on a new gasket which was still good 40k later when rust did in the truck. I traded number two, a rusted out Maxima Diesel, for number three, a gas Maxima which overheated on the way home and was definitely displacing coolant from cylinder gases. I nursed it home about 15miles, but the head turned out to be badly warped and I had to find another one.
I'd say if the coolant can't do it's job, forget it, but if the leak is minor, you might be ok.
