Here is my frustrating tale. I am GOING to fix this but I need your help.
1. Ball joint on driver's side of my 91 9000T broke while backing out of driveway. As a result...
2. Tripod popped out of cup (companion flange). Bang-bang when I let out the clutch. Took it apart, found a bit of superficial damage to the aluminum outer edge of the companion flange. Hammered and filed this so the new boot would be happy. Inner surfaces seem in fine shape.
3. Installed new ball joint; now there's a rhythmic clunk-clunk (one per wheel revolution) upon moderate braking.
4. Trying to fix this, I've replaced LH wheel bearing, and LH axle. It also needed new rotors, so I put on a pair of those. Absolutely no change. It still clunks from the left front only on braking. (There is NO vibration on acceleration.)
5. Aargh! My leading theory is distortion of the cup (companion flange) when I let out the clutch and the tripod bearing popped out. But why does it clunk-clunk only under braking? Why is it perfectly smooth under accel if I have a problem with inner driver? Why should braking cause inner driver clunk? It shouldn't.

So I don't like my leading theory. But everything else that rotates in the left front is new! Sherlock Holmes would say that once you've eliminated everything else, whatever is left, however improbable, is your man. Or something like that.

Any diagnostic pointers from you guys with drivetrain experience would be greatly appreciated.

Another thought. Since I have a spare good wheel bearing, I might replace the right one just in case my ears can't tell left from right. (Don't much like that idea either...)
