driving home from work, accelerating from a traffic light (briskly). about to shift to 3rd, clutch in to shift **BANG** let clutch out, no go: I'm coasting. I think, I misshifted and it popped out of gear, retry, no dice I'm still coasting.

Now I'm a little more pissed. Immediately I think clutch is toast. So I pull off onto a side street, call the GF to tell her I'll be late, call AAA to get the tow on the way, call the shop to get on the books. I get out, take a look under the hood and under the car. Everything looks normal at first glance, nothing appears out of place. Hop back in and fire it up, starts fine, let the clutch out in neutral and get a horrible metal scraping/grinding/weird sound coming from the clutch (driver's side) region under the hood. (It's an original clutch with 205K miles on it) I try putting it in gear and letting the clutch out, nothing, the engine just keeps idling and the sound continues without change. I noticed the speedo moved up when in gear with the clutch out. I call Group 9 to order their new clutch kit (kevlar) and lightened flywheel for my car (that I was planning to do anyway in the two next month or so).

After we get the car to the shop, we're getting it off the flatbed. Towtruck man notices the left wheel is weird, it's clicking and moves a bit too freely when we push on it. Check underneath, the outer CV boot is off and when the wheel rolls the driveshaft on that side doesn't turn. Oh awesome I think, I've ordered a clutch (which I was planning anyway) and now it's something else. I'm hoping the CV just took a dump on me, and isn't somethhing like the wheel bearing. I will likely just have them install the clutch and lightened flywheel while it's in the shop even if that isn't the problem (though I'm pretty sure it is).

It'll be a week before I can get the clutch/flywheel assembly (they balance them together before sending them) I think I'll just have the shop replace the broken stuff and the clutch. That way I don't have to deal with finding a weekend I'm free when my cousin is free to do the work with me.
