The ABS system performs a self-test on startup, and continuously throughout the drive.
If the light comes on when you start the car, and stays on before you drive off, one possible issue can be a bad ABS wheel sensor. The ABS compares the resistance of each sensor when the engine is first started. If one sensor is out of whack with the others, it gets flagged, and the ABS light stays on to indicate the fault. The other test compares the speed signals out of the sensors when the brakes aren't applied, but that test can't be run until the car is moving.
If the light doesn't go off while you're still stopped, the first thing to do is measure the resistance of each sensor. Open the hood and remove the cover at the base of the windshield on the driver's side (US cars), and in there you'll find the ABS box (and ECU). The ABS sensors connect up to the ABS box harness with two-pin connectors - they look like thick black pencils, about 2" long. Pop them apart (one at a time!) and measure the resistance of each. I think it should be around 1200 ohms, but look for one that's markedly different from the others. If they all look OK, reconnect the sensors, and pull off and put back on (re-seat) the 'harmonica' connector on the ABS box. It's called a harmonic connector because it's long and thin, and well, looks like a harmonica. Then give it a drive.
If the resistance of one sensor is way off, it's a bad sensor and needs to be replaced. If the resistances are all OK, simply reseating the connectors may do the trick, cleaning off a little oxide build-up. If that doesn't do it, then about all you can do is bring it to a mechanic and have them read out the codes.
