Clutch replacement leads to discovery + repair #2!

This past weekend, I replaced the clutch in my 88 9000 turbo. Had assistance from fellow TSN poster--Victor--for the removal. Thanks a ton to him for his help!
I still have a lot of work left--stopped when the engine support beam was removed and the the car could be put back on the ground. My landlord hates to come by and see a car upon on jackstands.
Anyway, when we took out the transmission, the inside of the bell housing was COVERED with oil! I knew that I had an oil leak somewhere, and suspected the rear main seal. Removed the flywheel, and the picture became clear. Oil was coming from above the seal--looks to be from the distributor o-ring. Replaced the main seal anyway, and tightened up the plate on the engine block.
In all, I did the following: rear main seal, new clutch/pressure plate/release bearing, redid clutch line to eliminate rubber section, cleaned transmission inside and out, put heater hose into gaps of tranny mount, checked tranny oil level (it was fine and clean at 200,000 miles), new shift linkage.
So here's the question, and an old-school question at that, since it's a non-DI car. How exactly does one replace this o-ring? Do I need to remove the valve cover and take out the whole distributor shaft? The car is overdue for a cap and rotor replacement anyway, and I'd like to do it all at the same time. I have the Haynes manual, but I'm not quite "getting it". Any tips, procedures, etc. would be much appreciated.
Thanks.
