For a SAAB, you can get new cheap tie rod ends for about $10 each, genuine TRW parts for about $20; I imagine that you could obtain them for a VW for a similar amount. So, what remaining value is left on the one that hasn't worn out yet - $5 worth maximum?
Chances are, you will need to realign your car (or van) for $50 - $100 after installing the new parts. How many times do you want to do this to use up that $5 remaining value?
