in Saab's jargon (and other makers too I believe) it stands for Manifold Absolute Pressure, and its purpose is to tell the ECU exactly what the pressure in the intake manifold is. I suppose it's really doing the same job as the older style Air Mass Meter, but it is probably a little more precise in its measurements and acts on the air actually IN the manifold, rather than upstream of it as in the Air Mass Meter. Possibly your mechanic uses the terms interchangeably because of the similarities of their purposes.
In either case, the objective is to give the computer some idea how much air is entering the engine, and more importantly how much oxygen. MAFs might also help the computer tell whether the turbo is overboosting, but there you have me....
