Matt, there are two types of BPC. The one used on the APC models (the ones with distributors) is shaped like a can of tuna. The 1986 model will be that type. The BPC used on the cars with Direct Ignition (1989 or 1990 depending on the world market) is an upright cylinder (tomato paste can to continue with the analogy), so you can use one from any year after 1990.
Have you tried cleaning the BPC you have? Do you have continuity on the coil windings? It should be 2 Ohms from the common terminal to the two outer pins.
