'white' fuel fitting, maybe some useful info -> Posted by vtsnaab [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
As previously posted, my white fuel check valve fitting let go recently.
I have learned some things from this that I hope may help others....
O-rings (2 req'd) - Saab part 79-74-546 - at the stealer - $7;
From the auto parts store 10 x 15 x 2.5 59 cents each !
Now to the important part - I have not seen anyone ever post what
the super-duper fuel line is actually made of, just that it is
very hard to work with, and the last time I tried this (on my '93
Aero) I just gave up and used neoprene - this time I thought first.
So - this stuff is very strong, so much so that we can use a
flaring tool clamp to stiffen it for insertion of the barbed
fitting, right ?
This to me means it is not only very thin, and has a very low
melting point, but it is somehow also very strong, and not just
in it's ability to hold pressure, so, by extension - it must
also be very able to take stuff like stretching - so I tested
this theory in action, with success - thusly:
With the old fitting still in place, I clamped the hose into
the flaring tool's clamp - then I used a cheapo, thin shafted
flat bladed screwdriver, and worked it into and around the
barbed part (and while doing this, luckily, the barb snapped
off the rest of the way !).
I continued to work the blade in and around until I had
belled out the tubing, and simply then snatched out the rest
of the barb with pliers - then quickly stuck the new one in,
most of the way - effortlessly !!!
I then was able to not only wiggle it in the rest of the way,
but then got to watch the tubing shrink, as if by memory - it
was very cool to watch.
Being a suspenders AND belt kinda guy I then put a mini clamp
around it for the sake of good measure - and proceeded to go
do the fuel filter while the pressure was off the lines.
Just one tip here - the clamp bolt (self tapping) was a rusty
mess, and after vicegripping it out, I needed another hex head
self tapper, but had no ride to the h/w store - so what did I
use ?
A hex headed, self-sealing, galvanized metal roof screw, with
an added washer - a perfect fit, and I have a bagful of 'em !!
Happy Saabing.
