Chain Guide Pad Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Tue, 24 May 2005 14:59:53 In Reply to: Chain Rattle...HELP!, Brent, Tue, 24 May 2005 12:27:56 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
There is a small plastic chain guide pad affixed to the inside of the valve cover, measures about 1 inch x 4 inches. This part is designed to absorb some impact from the timing chain, and gets hard as it ages, reducing its cushioning ability. On your car, it's 12+ years old and chances are it is as hard as a rock.
The good news is that replacement is very easy, same procedure as replacing the valve cover gasket, swap out the guide when it's open. Be sure to buy both the guide and the gasket, do both at the same time or you will have leaks (the gasket is also as hard as a rock at this point). If this doesn't quiet things down, then you might have a problem - but I would start here - depending on where you buy, the parts might be less than $30.
If you are interested (and you might not be since you are getting rid of the car), you can examine the chain for stretch by putting the engine at TDC and observing where the pointers on the cam gears line up to their designated marks on the camshaft caps.
