UPDATE:

there was no pressure in system (maybe leak over winter, maybe when headgasket was done last week?)

i refilled (to 35) with R134a (correct for my 93 CSE) and it runs cool now, but the fan is still an issue. the light indicator remains on the low button the entire time, except at startup when it rests in the middle.

i'm guessing that the high speed part of the fan control burned, which may have caused my old blower motor to burn out, and so now, with my new blower motor, the fan control is limiting me to slower speeds only?

if that's the case, and if i'm not at risk of damaging new motor, i might leave it, because i didn't like to go too high anyway due to noise.

i think i must be at 50 - 70% of max speed down to the lowest setting (i can still control up and down)
