My 88 maybe different but i have taken the glove box out 10 times. The vent with the grille is attached to the glovebox facia. And does not reqiure any seperation on removal, only installing it to make it easier. There are two molded areas that maybe called clips, on the back of the vent, which align the vent grille assy. to the duct. They are 1/8 inch. high and 1 inch long. They are only at expansion fit as the duct work is thin molded plastic that is a little pliable. The resistence you maybe feeling is possibly that, I just pull alittle and it pops right off.
To put it back on, look at the vent on the bottom and passenger door side for a plastic Clip which needs to be pryed up and apart to seperate the grille from the glovebox facia. There are one on each side (2) total. And the glovebox light wiring and switch are in the area too.
Maybe this will help you.
