Actually, I always replace just the bulb, and simply solder it into the existing carrier. I just didn't want to assume soldering skills.
I get bulbs from Radio Shack. I believe their 272-1092 bulbs are the ones I use. They are a two pack for a whopping $1.49. It's a 12 Volt, 60 MA wire-lead bulbs. I unsolder the old ones and solder in the new. They also work decently for window switch bulbs for the older individual switches.
