Year and # of cylinder is important, too Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Someone explain: CS - CS Turbo - CSE etc?, heya, Tue, 31 May 2005 19:51:02 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
CS and CSE were trim and marketing levels, and they changed over the years.
And this only refers to the US market - Europe had many more options floating around.
For example, in '93 and '94, you could get both the CS and CSE trim levels in both turbo and non-turbo. Only the CDE and Aero were guaranteed turbos. And there was only full pressure turbos available.
In following years, when the Low Pressur turbo came out, the CS generally became the LPT model. But there may have been versions that you could get with the full pressure turbo.
The CSE was available as the Full Pressure turbo, AND as a V6. The V6 was a non-turbo, so you could get a N/A CSE - just with two extra cylinders.
If you want hard and fast rules, don't include marketing.
You want to know what engine the car came from the factory with? Get the VIN. This info is from the model FAQ - http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/models/1986-989000cn.html
Look at the 8th character in - the letter after two numbers. The letter "M" means the full pressure turbo. The letter "U" means the light pressure turbo. "R" is the Aero engine - full pressure turbo plus some. But since the Aero with an automatic tranny has reduced power, it gets an "M" engine. Want to know the tranny? Look at the number just before the engine letter. "8" is autobox, "5" is manual.
The letter "B" is the four-cylinder (2.3l) non-turbo; "W" is the 6-cylinder.
It would be nice if it were all straightforward, but it isn't. Saabs did change over the years -not quite as much as other cars, but they did change.
