Could also be a vacuum leak. If it is big enough the engine will start and you would be able to drive it as long as you don't let it idle. I once forgot to reconnect a 1/2 inch hose to the throttle body and it would drive but die when idling. Because the car is from '89 the rubber air hoses under the hood might be bad causing an air leak. Check the hoses to the throttle body and to the valve cover.
