If you want to keep the self-leveling feature, I think you're stuck with the expensive Nivomats.
If you're willing to give the self-leveling up, you can replace them with regular shocks. This is what most folks do when faced with replacing the shocks. You will also need to replace the rear springs - the springs with the Nivomats are too soft. Many folks like using the springs from '89 and earlier, as they are a bit stiffer. But a set of used springs in good shape would be fine.
