Question RE: Manual Trans. Dip Stick

1990 Manual five speed. I'm haveing trouble understanding the logic of this dip stick. I have put 2.5 Qts. 10w-30 and it reads 1/4 inch above the notch on the dip stick. I learned from a previous thread that the proper amount for this tranny is 2.5 liters ( which is a slightly larger amount) by correcting this error the level on the dip stick will be higher. I guess the notch on the stick has no bearing as to it's being full.
the tranny was used (100,000+ miles)and I flushed it twice with oil and turn it upside down to drain it. The last time the oil came out relatively clean, so I can't imagin that there is enough sludge build up to make up the volume difference on the stick.
Does anyone have any experiance with this? How about running the tranny with more oil than what is recomended? At what point does the tranny leak? Is it a presure problem and or volume? The tranny works well with a bearing whine in 4th and 5th gear Would a get better protection from
10w-40 in stead of 10w-30? I plan to put in a drain plug and flush it again. Then I hope to rebuild the old one. I'll keep you posted. But that is several months down the road and that's why I want to keep this one working. Thanks again to the Saab Community
