This is a very easy fit indeed. The electronic control unit locates on the back of the battery box, the brackets for the pedal switches are in place, and the wiring is present. There is even a "cruise" light on the dash to tell you when the units is switched on, even if not engaged.
According to the EPC the part number for the control unit is correct for 1997 and the same for both autos and manuals. The operating cable is certainly different between 4- and 6-cyliner cars (different nipple design) but these detach and are easy enough to find second-hand (I have an idea you are UK-based).
I actually fitted a 6-cylinder unit to my 1997 automatic by changing the operating cable and it works fine.
You need to make sure you have the correct cable harness to connect the pre-wired connector to the pedal switches. The manual number is 45 37 775, auto is 45 37 783. The pedal contact is universal.
Fitting the lever is very easy once you've removed the shroud by the steering column, which involves several different Torx sizes and turning the wheel to access the clip holding the two halves together. There's a write-up by Ari somewhere.
Finally, if you are in any doubt try calling whoever it is (2-stroke to Turbo or Neo Brothers, I guess) and asking them!
