I have done it several times. Get a helicoil kit before you even begin...
Take the oil and water lines off from the block, not the turbo, it's easier for me this way. Undo the exhaust (the flex pipe may be rusty, dont push your luck with it) and the intake as well.
IF you have a heat shield under your compressor, you will have to remove the compressor, if not, then you can get it off without removing the compressor, depends on how good you are in tight places...
The exhaust studs are steel as are the bolts. The head is aluminum. Due to the rot, your going to strip a few bolt holes in the head, thus the helicoil kit. Use antiseize when you put it all back together.
If your feeling ambitious and want to do this job so that it lasts the rest of the cars life, use a straight edge and check for warping on both the head and manifold. The manifold can be ground straight at a machine shop. The head is not likely to be warped but can be slightly straightened if you have a die grinder and some 3m pads. Works great for cleaning up the gasket surface. I like to use copper spray when putting it all back together.
