The autobox on the 9000 is a weak point. But that is in comparison to the rest of the car, which should easily go well over 200K. An autobox should last 80-120K miles. Good care won't guarantee that it never fails, but it will help.
First and foremost, change the tranny fluid frequently. Most folks never change it. Most folks recommend a change every 15-20K miles. When the fluid is drained, you get around half, at best. One approach is to change the fluid, drive it a few days, and change it again. Daren's concept of the 'continual' change every 7K miles or so isn't a bad idea either. Or you can find some places that will flush the fluid.

The autotranny has a filter. It is a metal screen filter. At a minimum, pull the filter when you change the fluid and wash it clean with some clean tranny fluid. Or you can just replace it - they're not very expensive.

The tranny has a fluid cooler as part of the radiator. I don't think there is a need to add another.

Other things to do with the tranny is to treat it right and keep on top of issues. If you back out of the driveway, come to a full stop before shifting into drive. Don't worry about driving the car hard, but let the car warm up first. That goes for the engine.

And if you start to notice minor problems with the tranny, get them fixed. If it starts to slip on shifts, if shifts become harsh, if you get any engine over-rev on up or down shifts,or it begins starting up in 2nd gear, get it fixed. As Daren said, sometimes it may be as simple as a valve body spring or a govenor seal. Both can be replaced with the tranny in the car, pretty cheaply. But if you let those problems hang around, they don't get better- they get worse. And they can destroy the tranny.
