I have a 1995 9000 Aero and had a similar situation. When I got the car, turning the switch to the left turned the lights off (no DRLs it seemed). Turning it to the middle put on the parking lights (the yellows). All the way to the right turned on the headlights. Stalk switch for the brights. After having a brake light switch replaced by local indie mechanic things changed. Now the lights cant be turned off at all (they said the car has DRLs, but dont know why they werent on before). So all the way to the left is on but brights cant be turned on at all. Middle is the same deal. With switch all the way to the right I can use brights with stalk switch. Also some cars (dont know for sure about ours) DRLs can be turned off when the parking brake is engaged. AS far as intermittent working, it sounds like you may have a faulty headlight switch, especially since your switch positions seem off.
