Since this is new, the real question is if it comes back.
From what I understand, the "ERR" comes on the display is a reading for one of the EDU functions is outside a certain set of parameters. If that incorrect reading continues even after you start driving, the "ERR" will show up in the display when you select that function.
How does this work?
For instance, I had a bad outside temp sensor. On startup, the EDU would show "ERR". When I cycled through the EDU displays, I would have normal readouts for everything except at the temp sensor, where it said "ERR". I noticed no effect on how the car drove with this "ERR" in the display.
So what did I do?
I had bought a grab bag of parts, and one of the parts was temp sensor. It was the wrong part number, but I plugged it on there anyway. Now, my display reads about 40 degrees too high, but I'll take that over the "ERR" reading! Haven't really worried about it since.
What's happening in your case?
Somehow, the MPG calculator wasn't working right on startup. I don't know what sensors are involved, but it may get all of its readings from the engine control computer (RPMs, speed, fuel delivery, etc.). I'd see if it happens again. If it becomes a regular thing, then I'd be concerned. But if it happens today, and again six months from now, I don't think there's much to worry about.
Good luck.
