Your speed controller probably failed like mine - a bad connection at the harness. The bad connection allows the high amp wires (feeding the blower motor) to arc and this generates a ton of heat. The high heat quickly burns out the transistor/resistor guy.
I found this out by replacing the transistor only - a $15 repair. The fan had kicked up to HI only. Upon inspection, I noted that the harness was melted to the point I could not get a good connection. I replaced the transistor and re-installed with the toasty harness. It worked great for 2 days and then I got a big whiff of electrical smoke and the fan again kicked up to high. I did not suspect the fan then because it ran so well and quiet (no chirping sound on low like a worn bearing or anything). So I went to the junkyard and found a good recently crashed 9000. I removed the fan speed controller AND chopped out the harness connection. I installed the new looking speed controller and chopped off the old, toasty harness connection. I was forced to splice in the new (to me) harness connection with household wire nuts but since it is tucked away in the aquarium, no-one can see it.
The speed controller and harness ran $10 at the junk yard. The repair has now lasted close to 3 years.
Just an FYI.
