Dying auto trans?

'90 9kt auto with 139,000 miles.
Auto trans never had problems before,
trans stops after a bit of hot weather driving,
normal operation returns after letting car cool down.
More specifically,
Okay - drove about 30 miles today (hot today).
Car was acting fine, then transmission didn't
shift to 3rd. Things got weird from there.
As I took it easy on way home I gradually lost
drive. Finally I had no drive power = step on gas, engine responds but
nothing happens. Pushed it into a nearby parking lot.
Turned it off, then tried to start it again. No start.
An hour later it still won't start.
So, left it there for about 3 hours. Went back, car
started right up, and transmission worked fine for about a mile.
Then started to loose drive power again, but I made it into my
driveway.
Only thing I noticed on inspection was the fan relay seems to have
burned out (not the high speed one), but the fuse wasn't blown.
Bottom of the relay had strong elec burn smell.
Any ideas? I am presently perusing the car want ads,
but hope that there's a better outcome possible.
Buck
