Slowly putting my transmission back together and have found one possible reason why reverse is hard to engage. The selector rods that guide the shift forks have detents that lock in on spring loaded balls in "gear engaged" or "not engaged" positions (the four rods are also interlocked by another set of balls at 90 degrees to the first that prevent two gears from being engaged at once). The "not engaged" detent in the reverse shaft is very deep which is both a good and a bad thing. Good in that the transmission won't jump into reverse, but bad because it takes a lot of force to get the rod out before it can move the reverse idler gear.
I'm tempted to relieve the edge of the detent a bit to get reverse to engage smoothly like the other gears but wondered if anyone's thought about, or done that before.
