Transmission Removal

Gentlemen,
I have to remove my 5 speed ('88 9Ks) to replace the slave cylinder. Fluid leaking out at a prodigious rate. Replaced it in error 4 years ago and may put the old one back in. But my question concerns the intermediate shaft. Since I don't have to drop the right subframe AND since the transmission pulls directly away from both the engine and the RH drive shaft, WHY must I remove the shaft at all? I'm using a scissors transmission jack so supporting the transmission isn't a big problem and I've finally learned to rotate the main pulley while aligning the input shaft. Seems like I could simultaneously pry the front bell housing away from the back plate while also prying the output shaft from the flange. Your comments, please?
