One day before going out of town, I pulled the engine on the car to replace the sump pan. The small wetness on the pan drain area worsened after I tried tighten it. The wet area in the driveway became four times the size. The wrecked 94cs sump pan came in handy since I just sold the block.
Anyway, finished the job 40 minutes before leaving home. I was going to replace the driveshaft in an attempt to cure the clunk on the driver side front. it wasn't necessary as it turned out. When I removed the driveshaft. The wheel bearing cap fell out from the CV joint side. I looked at the bearings. There were completely dry.
Is that supposed to happen? I have never done the front wheel bearing on a 9k. The c900 wheel bearing is pressed in. Apparently not the 9k. Is the 9k wheel bearing sealed? I would think so. In any case I have no time to foll around. It was 9:30 AM in the morning I am leaving home 12 PM. So I packed the balls with grease and put the cap back. I am now reasonably sure the clunk is related to the dry bearing. Whatever the verdict you guys provide I have to do it when I come back home a week from today.
But I test drove the car after putting everything together. The car drove much better. 7 hours yesterday to pull the drive train, remove the pan and replace. Put the drive train together, reinstall it into the car. 5 hours this morning to button things up. This must be a record. To think I removed it only a little more than a week ago.
