It's be interesting to look at the thickness or diameter of the extensions that are torque specific. I'll bet that they are thinner depending on the desired torque. At some point a thinner extension will deform if the torque exceeds the material's properties. At that point torque is no longer being applied to the work but is being taken up by the extension. I hope that helps a bit. Maybe there's a better explanation but since i haven't seen one that's how I understand the thing ot work.
