So I've got my 88 9kt all back together after a clutch job. Replaced a few other things while it was off the road, including alternator, distributor o-ring, cap and rotor, positive battery cable, and MC to slave clutch hose.
Thing is, now it idles horribly. There's a clacking, ticking sound when it's idling. The sound seems to come from the intake manifold area, but I'm not 100% sure. Doesn't seem to change with increasing RPMs. It's really loud!
The car has been sitting for several months, but ran pretty well before I took it off the road.
I thought that it may have something to do with the distributor, so I double checked the spark plug wires, and as far as I can tell, it's together correctly.
The spark plugs are black, so it looks like a rich condition. I could also see that the tops of the pistons have crud on them, but I think that has been there for a while. I regapped the spark plugs and tried again (they were more than 1.0mm). No change.
I took the car for a short drive to check out clutch operation, and it did its job--much better friction point! But the car did want to stall when getting into first gear (I did have to restart it twice). And the acceleration was painfully slow, not what I'm used to at all. The didn't buck, it was a smooth, very slow acceleration, but it did sound like it was backfiring in the lower gears.
Obviously, new spark plugs are on order, as well as cleaning the throttle body and AIC valve. I'm also going to make sure that the air filter is in properly.
Here's a couple other things that a BB search seemed to indicate I should check:
FPR--suck on hose to TB for vacuum
Vacuum lines for leaks
BPV (3 hose valve for turbo)
Anyone have suggestions, or encountered a similar situation? Testing procedures are especially helpful, since I've never really "tuned" an engine before.
Thanks for any input that you guys may have.
