The door locks have actuators -
a special one for the driver's side
that controls all the others as well,
and then three slave actuators in the
other doors that are opened by a signal from the
drivers door. BTW - it should also lock/unlock your
gas cap flap, as well as the hatch.
I would suspect that there is a wiring problem
to your rear actuators, since both your backs didn't work,
but it could have been that they were both burned
out. You can pick up actuators on ebay or in
parts lots at swap meets - I have a set
in my parts collection.
The snap you heard was probably one of the thick wires
that connects the button to the lock - especially if that's
the door they forced open. That wire can easily be replaced with
any chunk of decently stiff wire that you might have.
So you could test and see if the wiring to the rears is intact
- use a good actuator (maybe the one from front passenger side)
and plug it into the harness for the backs. If that works, new
actuators will fix your problem. If it doesn't, then it would be a
wire chase.
Now as to retro fitting a remote system, you could probably do it
with a system from a later model car, but that is way beyond my
level of electrical expertise, and sounds like a lot of work.
It would probably involve new circuits, and mods to your
alarm system to start with.
