You're right - the fuel pump is there, under an oval metal cover secured by a couple of quarter-turn fittings you undo with an Allen key. If the seal to this cover isn't intact you might get smells especially with a full tank - if there is fuel sitting on top of the pump, maybe that comes from a leak at one of the hoses (delivery and return) at their unions. There is an O-ring sealing the pump into the top of the tank, so if the leak is here it'll be best to rplace that.
There are obviously safety issues connected with any work in this area! I'd personally take the job to Kenny, who services my car.
