It would be an interesting engineering exercise, but I doubt a home-brew system would be more reliable. And as a VW owner myself, going to the VW coils for higher reliability is like setting your hair on fire to get rid of lice. Ever see how many recalls there have been on the VW coils?

You have either been the victim of very bad luck, or of used DI cassettes. I've got two DI cars, and I've only had one DI failure. Yes, I bit the bullet and bought new, and have had no problems. I'd expect problems if I bought used DIs. I don't know which you've gotten.

As I said, it would be an interesting engineering experiment. But I expect that not only would you spend a lot of money and time doing it, I doubt the results would be more reliable.
