Dear experts,
Here's a TCS/ABS problem that I haven't been able to find listed before, so any help would be appreciated. Car is a 93 9000 Turbo CSE, about 100k miles. It's had the new throttle body, new vacuum lines, new gizmo on the firewall that always goes bad, etc.
Here's the chronology:
--I was driving about three weeks ago, the TCS light came on, and the car went into limp-home mode, as per usual. Drove home that way.
--Subsequently, when I started the car, the TCS/limp home would not activate until the car had actually MOVED a little bit.
--But after letting the car sit for a couple of weeks (my preferred approach to auto repair), when I went to drive it, the TCS light had quit coming on (good) and the car ran in ordinary mode (better), but the ABS light came on (bad). However, I drove it this way for a couple of weeks, and had no problems with the TCS -- light never came home and it didn't once go into limp-home.
--I finally got around to diagnosing the ABS. It turned out that the 30A main ABS fuse was blown, and the cause was a bad diode in the ABS fuse box -- no surprise, since I'd replaced the other diode a couple of years ago. (Why didn't I replace both diodes at the same time? Because I'm STUPID.)
--Now the ABS system is happy -- no warning light. HOWEVER, I now have the red TCS warning light back on. And it comes on about 5-10 seconds AFTER the engine has started, whether or not the car is moving. However, the car does NOT go into limp-home mode, and I've been driving it that way for a couple of weeks.
I believe this suggests a relatively minor TCS problem, since a major one presumably would trigger limp-home mode. Any suggestions? And what about this weird "fixing the ABS triggered the TCS?"
In summary:
--first problem: TCS light came on, went into limp-home.
--second problem: TCS problem spontaneously went away, but ABS light came on.
--third problem: ABS fixed, but TCS light back on, but car NOT in limp-home and working fine.
Thanks for any ideas.
--Graham
PS: Because this car is a 93, I can't pull or clear codes, right? What about the suggestion to disconnect battery, then connect positive/negative battery wires for a couple of hours to "drain" the computer's memory?
