Well, I would say the problem is that they're made of rubber. You have 230K on your '88 and 165K miles on your '95, by last count on your website, and I know of no rubber hose that will hold up this long.
If you had a Dodge or something like that you'd have dumped the car long ago and wouldn't be seeing this problem. Since Saab engines last so long, we keep them longer, and so we see wear items failing. I believe this is where the "myth" of Saab unreliability among non-Saab-owners comes from. They see their Saab owning friends replacing parts that they themselves don't have to replace but don't notice at what mileage these repairs are occurring.
I replaced my PS hoses when I did a major teardown on my engine. Also replaced the oil cooler hoses. Both were leaking at that point, when the car was about 11 years old. Now good for another ten years, but I'm not going to expect rubber to last much longer than that. I guess we could go to braided stainless with some sort of silicon interior material, if we wanted a more permanent solution.
