increasing the gap was one of the tweaks to squeeze out some extra performance, as long as the ignition system didn't contain any "leaks". Leaks, meaning insuring there wasn't any other place for the voltage to go (cheap wires with low quality insulation, cap, rotor etc...) since the voltage seeks the path of least resistance. Increasing the gap increases the resistance. Back then, resistor type plugs were also used to enhance performance (or on engines which burned too much oil). Anyway, before I go off on a tangent, keep in mind that all cars are not equal (this also goes for car parts) due to tolerances and other factors. So, if it works, then go for it.
